Bethlehem Cultural Festival - Discussion and Dance

  • THE TABERNACLE TRUST The Tabernacle 34-35, Powis Square LONDON United Kingdom (map)

Khalil Shokeh and Maxim Sansour talk to Jacob Norris

19th Century Travellers of Bethlehem.

Khalil Shokeh and Maxim Sansour will discuss travellers of the 19 th Century and their

forthcoming book, the first English translation of Bethlehem in Palastina.

This fascinating book explores the famous town of Bethlehem more than 170 years ago,

through the eyes of Titus Tobler, a young Swiss doctor. Tobler travelled to Palestine for the

sole purpose of undertaking medical research. Over the course of four major visits to the

area, Tobler wrote several extensive geographical studies and travelogues on Palestine.

Some of Tobler’s most interesting observations describe the long-term feuds between

different Christian denominations in the town, which, along with similar feuds in Jerusalem,

would be used as a pretext for the Crimean War just four years after the publication of his

book.

Malak Mattar

Women under siege – survival through art

Malak Mattar joins the festival from Gaza to discuss the impact of war on her art and the

influences that mould her artwork.

Mattar, age 21, paints powerfully expressionist faces, figures, and semi-abstract designs.

She first started painting at age 13, during the 51-day Israeli military assault on Gaza in

2014. Forced to stay inside for her own safety, Malak says, “I felt a compelling need to

release all my negative energy—fear, anxiety, and sheer terror.” She started painting with

school art supplies, using basic watercolor on paper. A world of self-expression opened for

her.
