Portobello Panto Presents: Peterbello Panto

West London’s beloved Panto is making a flying return to the Tabernacle this Christmas with the magical, Peterbello Panto.

The Portobello Panto began more than 30 years ago in a pub on the Portobello Road. Since then, it has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for local charities. Despite the ample glitz, at its core the Panto is a community event that brings together artists, performers and children from the local area to have fun, entertain the crowds and raise money for good causes. As ever, the Panto is reliant on the work of volunteers to get the show on the road.

After our 2023 production, Theres no place like Grove. raised over £11,000 for our charities, this year we are raising money for the Shepherd’s Bush Families Project, Sistah Space and for school supplies at The Barlby Road Primary School. The funds raised every year for these organisations are vital at the best of times. With that in mind, we’re determined to raise as much as possible this year.

The Scapgegoat by Lucy Hughes-Hallett

The Scapgegoat by Lucy Hughes-Hallett

Harriet Walter and Alex Jennings

to read the dazzling new biography

by Lucy Hughes-Hallett

SHAKE Festival is delighted to announce a rehearsed reading of The Scapegoat, the glittering life of the Duke of Buckingham by Lucy Hughes-Hallett, published last month to rave reviews.

The brilliant cast of readers is made up of Alex Jennings and Harriet Walter along with newcomer Xander Ridge. Abridged by Hughes-Hallett herself and focusing on, ‘the flight to Spain’, in the central chapters, the reading is directed by Jenny Hall, artistic director of SHAKE Festival in Suffolk.

The reading takes place on January 22nd 2025 for one night only at The Tabernacle in London W11. The running time is one and a half hours with a fifteen-minute interval and tickets go on sale November 1st on Ticketsource.co.uk

“Working with these two extraordinary actors on this magnificent material is like a dream come true,” said Jenny Hall. “I’m also delighted to introduce a terrific young actor from Suffolk, Xander Ridge, as our third reader.”

“This fabulous biography is long overdue” The Guardian.

“Like its subject, this biography is a prodigy, an almost bewilderingly skilful portrait of James I’s reign in all its glittering strangeness.” The Spectator

SHAKE was founded by Hall in 2021 as a Community Interest Company. They produced livestreamed readings of Shakespeare during the pandemic, including an acclaimed Midsummer Night’s Dream starring Dan Stevens and Rebecca Hall, and The Tempest starring Geraldine James as Prospero. SHAKE also produces weekend festivals of Shakespeare working with local schoolchildren and leading Shakespeareans, and has a flourishing programme of community outreach.

Earlier this year Jenny Hall directed a reading of the George Ewart Evans’ classic of Suffolk agricultural life, The Horse in The Furrow, at the Saxmundham Arts Festival. In 2025 the company will embark on a new stage adaptation of Ronald Blythe’s Akenfield, which her father made into a film in 1974.

Harriet Walter’s new book She Speaks was published this month, offering “brilliant alternative insights” (The Guardian) on familiar Shakespearean stories, and she is soon to appear on Channel 4 as Margaret Thatcher in Brian and Margaret with Steve Coogan. Alex Jennings can be seen in Steve McQueen’s Blitz, with Saoirse Ronan and Elliott Heffernan, streaming on Apple TV + from 1st November.

Origin Story – The post-US election edition, live!

Origin Story – The post-US election edition, live!

Come join Dorian and Ian as they try to make sense of the US election result, just two days after the vote. Will American democracy still be alive and well or will it be on the path to fascism for dummies under Trump 2.0?

This show could go one of two ways: it will either be the mother of all parties, or the mother of all group therapy sessions. Either way, come down to the beautiful Tabernacle in West London and be with friends.

Tickets are available from here

We’ll be breaking down the campaign and the results from an Origin Story perspective, explaining what it means for populism, fascism, conspiracy theories, culture wars and Trumpworld grotesques like Elon Musk. We’ll be discussing some of the linguistic oddities of American politics and we’ll be taking questions from the smartest audience in the United States of Podcasts.

Also: we have books out. Have we mentioned that? This show will double up as the official launch of the new Origin Story book series. The run kicks off with Fascism (possibly pertinent), Centrism (hopefully pertinent) and Conspiracy Theory (definitely pertinent). We’ll have shiny new copies available at the show for selling and signing.

Origin Story: US election LIVE is the place to unravel one of the most dramatic election campaigns ever and celebrate/commiserate in good company.

Doors open at 6:30pm (early ticket collection advised to avoid queues).

BOWIE GOES ELECTRIC

Atomic Sunrise Screening 2: 8:00pm

David Bowie goes electric!

Appearing with his new backing band, Hype - Tony Visconti (bass) and John Cambridge (drums) who has brought in new man Mick Ronson (lead guitar). Also two unknown bands, Genesis and Hawkwind, appear on the famous Roundhouse stage for one of their first ever gigs.

For about a year, each have been holed up creating their new sound.

Now all three are going public!

Atomic Sunrise Festival catches them just as they begin their journey to fame. David Bowie had tasted success before with Space Oddity - but then, nothing! For him this is more than just music. Must be something different. Must be Theatre. So he and Hype, appear as Superheroes: Both he (Rainbowman) and Tony Visconti (Hypeman) wear silver glitter tights and 'Superman capes', Mick Ronson (Gangsterman) a golden 'gangster suite' and John Cambridge (Cowboyman), a stetson hat.

Sequines and Rock - the first glimmering of Glam Rock!

A year later Hype morph into The Spiders

This is a one off filming event so don't miss it! Be in the audience.

Only buy tickets if you agree to be filmed!

( Strictly no filming during the screening! We are not you! )

Franjo

He probably made you laugh on the internet, you will laugh at least 20 times more if you come see his show!

An hour of jokes, worked on for many years. You may have already seen him in Parisian scenes like the Paname Art Café, at the Jamel Comedy club, or in the first part of Paul Mirabel, where Franjo prowls parts of his show to reserve the best for you. An hour to talk to you about himself, his ex, Melun, and other social issues with a lot of irony. An hour that often goes by too quickly: you will not be disappointed. You will not come out of this show more mature, but happier!

Please arrive at 7pm. The show starts at 8pm and finishes at 9pm

Claudia Jones A Woman Of Our Time - Film Screening

Join West London Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! as they host a film screening to celebrate the life of Claudia Jones. While she is best known for founding Notting Hill Carnival, she was a communist who openly used Marxist and Leninist frameworks to make huge contributions to understanding the role that capitalism plays in exploiting the working class such as the ‘triple oppression’ of sexism, racism and classism that non-white women face and the need to recognise all three to build genuine solidarity against Imperialism.

After the film screening there will be an interactive discussion surrounding her legacy and how her ideas can be applied today.

This is a free event but please book you space at the button below

A financial donation to help support the cause would be appreciated.
